Have a 2018 Silverado with a 5.3 in it. A Cat came from somewhere and decided to get under my hood. Having no way of knowing this I started off to work. Needless to say I didn't make it. Without to many details all the belts where knocked off their pulleys but couldn't find any more damage to the engine. Replaced the 2 stretch belts and thought the hard part was over with until we tried reinstall serpentine. It just will not go on, I have looked at you tube videos and checked the routing over and over. We even tried to stretch the serpentine belt but we come out about an inch short.
We removed the tensioner and make sure it wasn't bend and double checked all the pulleys, we are at a complete loss.... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely sounds like the routing isnt right, or something is badly damaged.
Take a look at these pics and compare to how your trying to route it.

We used the very same belt, it just popped off, That is why this is this is so very strange. The routing we are using is the very same as the picture in the reply post.
We have looked and looked for any damage that could cause this and just cannot find any. I agree it should be either damage or the routing, but it isn't. I was hoping this had happened to someone else. If anyone has an idea of where to look for damage please let us know, we have run out of ideas.

You mention removing the tensioner....so I assume you used a wrench or breaker bar to pivot it over for slack when trying to install the belt?

If anything is damaged it's more than likely the tensioner. I doubt a cat getting wrapped up in the belt would damage the alternator or water pump.
The belt on these only drives those two things so there isnt much to check beyond the tensioner. If the alternaot and pump still spring free and domt have play in them, they are likely fine. And the crank pulley would take a lot more than a cat to damage.

Yes, we pivoted the tensioner as far as it would go, seems to work correctly (more on that in a second). I have changed many dozens of belts so I do understand the way the tensioner works, but thanks for asking because I forgot to mention it in my first post.
Now the reason we removed the tensioner, When we pivot it down it comes to within about a 3/4 of inch from the crank pulley and I was thinking it should go further down. So we removed it to make sure the "key" lobe in the back was lined up correctly and it was.
So you would think it would be damage but the crank pulley, alternator and water pump are all mounded on the block, since there isn't any cracks or damage I don't see how they could have moved. And we even started the engine to make sure the two strech belts we replaced worked and they did. The belt is the OEM belt that came with the truck when new.....

Can you maybe take some pictures of what it looks like with the belt almost there? Maybe a few looking in line with the belt from the sides...etc. maybe someone here will see something.

Well assuming the routing is correct, and nothing else is broken, the only other moving part here is the tensioner. Nothing else is capable of changing or adjusting belt tension other than the tensioner.
So if it doesnt move far enough to get the belt on, then it must have been damaged in some form.

Hi Guys,
Well you are were correct!!! Great job. We replaced the belt and the tensioner and all is well. Cannot see any differences in the structure of the tensioner but the spring wasn't near as stiff. I don't really know why but I am happy the mystery is solved.

Checking and Replacing Fuses
The wiring circuits in your vehicle are protected from short circuits by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible thermal links. This greatly reduces the chance of fires caused by electrical problems.
Look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse. If the band is broken or melted, replace the fuse. Be sure you replace a bad fuse with a new one of the identical size and rating.
Fuses of the same amperage can be temporarily borrowed from another fuse location if a fuse goes out. Replace the fuse as soon as you can.
Note
Before replacing a fuse check that the key has been removed from the ignition and that all the services are switched off and/or disengaged.
Do not repair fuses and never replace a blown fuse with one that has a higher amp rating. This can cause damage to the electrical system and fire.
Never replace a broken fuse with anything other than a new fuse. Use always an intact fuse of the same color.
If a fuse blows again contact a qualified service center.
Do not add anything electrical to your vehicle unless you check with your dealer/retailer first. Some electrical equipment can damage your vehicle and can keep other components from working as they should.
